Lee was still recovering the following month when news of another problem broke out. This time, he led a 500-man thrust to rescue 8,000 American troops trapped by Chinese forces.

2025. 11.11 5 o'clock at 11 o'clock AM Grand Hyatt Hotel Grand Ball Room, Hannam-dong, Seoul

I am Sunny Park, who lives in Atlanta, Georgia.

I am honored to dare to explain this historic work in front of you, who are lacking in.

The Korean War United Nations Veterans Memorial Foundation has been born with the purpose of building the most solemn and grand Korean War related memorial park in the world.

To construct this park, including 1,700 pyeong (approximately 5,600 square meters) designated for monuments, we need a land area of about 5,000 pyeong (approximately 16,500 square meters) and a budget of roughly 60 billion won.

Securing the site for the park with the support of the Korean government is the most important and significant challenge. The construction fund will be raised through a nationwide campaign, with more than one million Korean citizens participating.

I believe the spirits of those War heroes will feel that their sacrifice has been worthy when over one million Koreans, young and old, voluntarily donate contributions and dedicate this Memorial Park.

I was born and raised here in Seoul, and the Korean War began when I was 8 years old.

I was still a young boy who went on an evacuation route with his family and joined the battlefield. I witnessed countless soldiers and civilians dying.

At that time, soldiers from the United States and United Nations member countries who looked different from us, Koreans, were killed while fighting bravely to save the freedom and lives of Koreans in a distant and distant battlefield.

Some of soldiers with blonde hair was carried to death on a rice paddy field, and a dark-skinned soldier was lying on the soybean field with his eyes open to the sky and dying.

One summer day, I was playing in the stream at the refuge site with two of my 9-year-old mischievous friends.

Suddenly a fighter jet emitted smoke with a roar from the peaceful blue sky and crashed into a nearby mountain where we were playing, the three of us children ran to the scene without saying who was first. The wreckage of the fighter jets was scattered with flames, and at the scene we were looking for the pilots who might have survived.

But it was not the appearance of the wounded American pilots that blocked our view, but the flesh of the pilot, torn to pieces and frozen on the branches of trees.

The pilot’s parts of body on a branch, and a bent pistol hung from the bowels of his body hanging from a branch, swaying like a pendulum on a wall clock.

We, the boys and I had seen many bodies during the war, but this was the first time we had seen such a tragic scene.

We were at a loss for words and held back tears as we looked at each other.

We realized that there was nothing we could do, so we turned around and went to the village, and found a photo on the grass full of clover flowers. Saw in the black and white family photo with a happy smile, it was easy to find a young man who was assumed to be the pilot of the fighter.

He was smiling widely. His wife, who was presumed to be his son, was also smiling widely as well. A beautiful family!

After that incident and the war ended, and we went back to normal life as peace was given to us.

The people of the Republic of Korea worked hard and were able to enjoy freedom. Several decades have passed, the Republic of Korea has achieved industrial development, and the lives of the people have become comfortable.

I immigrated to the United States in 1974 and became a U.S. citizen.

In 1990, the Gulf War began, the United States was struggling with recruitment, and the U.S. Congress began discussing the conscription of young Americans, my youngest son, who was 16 years old at the time, received a physical examination notice from the government to register for conscription.

I woke up. I couldn't sleep at night because I thought that if my beloved son, whom I had raised preciously, was sent to the desert to protect the country I never really care, called Iraq, he might not be able to return home alive.

The bodies of American soldiers who were oxidized in the Korean War, which had been forgotten for 40 years, began to appear in my memory. I felt that the family photo of the unknown pilot I met during the Korean War who died in the flesh of so many fragments overlapped with the face of my family.

I thought I had my own amount of gratitude to the spirits who died in the Korean War, but after receiving my son's physical examination notice for his conscription, I realized that the amount of my gratitude to the Korean War veterans was way too shabby.

Immediately, I had to call then Georgia Governor Zell Miller and secured a site for a Memorial front of the State Capitol buildings to erect a memorial monument engraved with the names of 740 Georgians who died in the Korean War, it was Veterans Day of 1991.

I couldn't save the deceased just by erecting a Memorial, but I wanted to do something to express the gratitude to those precious souls of Georgians who died for me and my fellow Koreans in Korea.

Subsequently, we sponsored the establishment of a Korean War Veterans Monument in Tennessee, and in 1995, we sponsored the establishment of a Korean War Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., the capital of the United States. Just three years ago, in 2022, I worked as a director of the Korean War Veterans Memorial Foundation to build a 'Wall of Remembrance' with the Korean government to cover construction costs and participated as a donor.

However, there is still much to be desired to express gratitude for the freedom, life and prosperity gained through their sacrifices.

I may be a greedy person, but I feel that the memorial facilities in Korea, which is the only beneficiary country that benefits the sacrifices of Korean War veterans are short compared to the Memorial in DC.

Of course, there is a plaque with the names of the victims of the Korean War engraved on the Korean War Memorial of Korea, which I am proud of.

However, we judge that the scale of its grandeur is not up to the level of UN veterans who are familiar with the scale of the Washington Memorial Park.

Americans who sacrificed 36,564 people to help the Republic of Korea erected more than 200 monuments dedicated to Korean War veterans, and the names of Korean War veterans are placed on numerous highways throughout the United States.

Compared to this, only about 20 monuments have been erected in South Korea, which is the only beneficiary country of the supreme sacrifices.

The fact that there is no memorial park for UN soldiers in Korea other than the cemetery in Busan is a pity for the preparatory committee members who want to build this memorial park.

The memorial plaque erected at the War Memorial of Korea, the largest memorial facility in South Korea, includes the names of UN soldiers who died in the United Nations, but it is also part of the more than 210,000 names of Korean War victims. The consensus is that the name plaque erected when South Korea's economic situation is not good (per capita national income is 7,000 dollars) is meager than the scale of the Wall of Remembrance carved in Washington, USA.

The UN Forces Cemetery in Busan is one of the few facilities in Korea that commemorates the victims of foreign soldiers, but its location is in a remote place like other cemeteries, so it is not easy for people who do not have a special reason to make a special trip.

Rather, the United States, the donor country, is installed on the National Mall, the central area of the capital, and in the front yard of the Lincoln Memorial, which is the busiest, so it is very comparable.

Korean War United Nations Veterans Memorial Foundation established in the United States to support memorial services in Korea is joined by former commanders of United Nations forces, General John Tilelli and General Larry Ellis.

In addition, the Foundation's board of directors includes Mr. Frank Blake, the great-grandson of General James Van Fleet, a Korean War hero who sparked the modernization of the Korean military, and Judge Miles Davis, the son of Marine General Davis, a medal of honor recipient and the hero of the Battle of Chosin Reservoir (Jang Jin Lake).

Coincidentally, today is Veterans Day of the United States, when the United States honors the heroes of the salvation of the country.

Above all, your presence while busy with work to participate in the historic project after putting off other important tasks reassures us that our plans will go smoothly.

Thank you very much for participating!

From now on, we are members of the team! The team to build the memorial and the history.

           Thank you for your support.

May God bless the souls of the Korean War heroes, and the project!

The Statue of Liberty still stands on the base funded by Pulitzer's efforts

As the Statue of Liberty was shipped from France, efforts to raise funds for its pedestal stalled. But thanks to a newspaper campaign and the small donations of hundreds of residents, the base was eventually built. Rodrigo Davies, a researcher at the Center for Civic Media at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, explores America's first major crowdfunding project.

By the summer of 1885 the Statue of Liberty was in New York in pieces, awaiting assembly.

Designed by French sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi and paid for by the government of France, the statue was a diplomatic gift to the US. However, the US had been unable to raise $250,000 for a granite plinth for the statue - around $6.3m (£4.1m) at today's prices.

A group called the American Committee of the Statue of Liberty was tasked with raising the money but fell short by more than a third.

New York Governor Grover Cleveland rejected the use of city funds to pay for it, and Congress could not agree on a funding package.

Amid the uncertainty, Baltimore, Boston, San Francisco and Philadelphia offered to pay for the pedestal in return for the statue's relocation.

It seemed as though New York had run out of options when renowned publisher Joseph Pulitzer decided to launch a fundraising campaign in his newspaper The New York World.

The campaign was given front-page treatment in The World

The campaign eventually raised money from more than 160,000 donors, including young children, businessmen, street cleaners and politicians, with more than three-quarters of the donations amounting to less than a dollar.

It was a triumphant rescue effort: in just five months The World raised $101,091 - enough to cover the last $100,000 to complete the pedestal and have money leftover for a gift for the sculptor.

If launched today, the campaign would be a classic crowdfunding project like those run online by Kickstarter and Indiegogo. It used a single collection point - the newspaper - to raise money from a very large pool of donors each pledging as little as pocket change.

Successful Kickstarter fundraisers are usually very skilled at generating momentum - and donations - by attracting media coverage and building connections with their backers through regular, personal insights into their campaigns.

When Rob Thomas, creator of the Veronica Mars television programme, sought to fund a film spin-off, he wrote four blog updates to fans in the campaign's first 24 hours.

           They responded, donating $2.5m.

The World's journalists used similar storytelling techniques to great effect. Amid their appeals for support, the paper printed updates and letters from the public on its front page.

The paper kept a running tally of contributions, and between March-August 1885 it chronicled every donation to the Statue of Liberty fund.

On 22 March, Philip Bender, from Jersey City, wrote that his family was donating $2.65, including his children: "Philip and Eliza Bender, 50 cents each; (children) - Anna, 25 cents; Frannie, 25 cents; Leonard, 10 cents; Frank, 15 cents; Alice, 10 cents; Ralph, 10 cents; Carri, 10 cents; Miss Nicey 25 cents."

On 30 May, Jonathan Sooville, the mayor of Buffalo, donated his $230 annual salary, while 43 wealthy New Yorkers each offered $250.

Collective fundraising efforts have existed for millennia - membership models for 17th Century book printing, public subscriptions to fund UK parks in the 19th Century, and collective financing of Bollywood films in the 1970s.

The Statue of Liberty campaign resembles a modern online crowdfunding effort in several impressive ways: the speed with which the money was raised, the number of small donations, and the fact that the whole process was managed by one agent - the newspaper.

Like many modern crowdfunding campaigns, The World offered rewards, including gold coins for the largest donor.

Modern Kickstarter campaigns typically offer rewards ranging from T-shirts to a personal visit from an artist or an executive producer credit on a film.

It may have taken more than a century for the internet to turn crowdfunding into a $1.5bn-a-year industry with an array of creative ways to attract potential funders, but even in Pulitzer's time other prominent New York figures recognised the potential of The World's model.

In June 1885 the infamous financier and property owner Erasmus Wiman, known as The Duke of Staten Island, invited The World's managing editor Joseph Cockerill to discuss a secret development on Staten Island "which, after the Bartholdi Statue is completed, would be a glorious a mission for The World".

There's no evidence in the newspaper's archives that Cockerill accepted the meeting, which was probably lucky: Wiman was later jailed for fraud.

For The World, the Statue of Liberty success prompted a series of high-profile campaigns. The newspaper raised funds for a memorial to Civil War general and later president Ulysses Grant and waged a long campaign for tax reform.

But Pulitzer's great crowdfunding effort remained one of his proudest achievements - and one still on display today.

BALTIMORE (JTA) — Draping his country’s ribboned Peace Envoy Medal over the head of Irwin Goldstein, South Korea’s ambassador to Israel, Ma Young-Sam, felt a deep sense of national and personal gratitude.

National, for Goldstein’s fighting for the United States in the Korean War. Personal, because Ma’s father held a municipal government position when the communist North invaded South Korea in 1950 and might have been executed had his country lost the war.

Goldstein was one of seven Korean War veterans residing in Israel honored by Ma on June 25, 2009. The ceremony has been held each year since, with the next one set for June 25, the anniversary of the war’s start.

The upcoming gathering at Kim’s official residence on Moshav Rishpon, near Tel Aviv, also will celebrate a half-century since Israel and South Korea established diplomatic relations. For the event, Ma’s successor as ambassador, Kim Il-Soo, has invited 25 American veterans now living in Israel and hopes to reach others who live in Israel or will be visiting.

“We Koreans appreciate very genuinely the sacrifice by foreign soldiers,” Kim said. “Without [it], we don’t know what our fate would have been.”

South Korean embassies annually honor veterans in the 16 countries that fought the North under the United Nations banner. Israel is the only country outside of the allied nations from the conflict where such a ceremony is held, Ma and Kim said. While the Jewish state did not send soldiers to fight in the Korean War, Ma’s research in Israeli archives yielded two key discoveries.

He learned that Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion convened an emergency Cabinet meeting at President Chaim Weizmann’s Rehovot home seven days after the war’s outbreak. There, Ma said, Israel made a strategic turn to the United States by supporting America’s pro-South efforts against the Soviet Union-backed North. Israel also decided to send $100,000 in food items to South Korea.

“This was 1950. Israel was not rich at the time,” Ma said last week from Seoul, where he now handles the Foreign Ministry’s public diplomacy and performance evaluation. “We appreciate that very much.”

Ma decided to honor the veterans after seeing a photograph of Normandy’s World War II battlefield cemetery, which showed a lone gravestone sporting a Star of David. With just five years separating the wars, he figured that some Jewish World War II soldiers also likely fought in Korea — and some must have retired to Israel.

He contacted the Washington-based Jewish War Veterans, which connected him with Korean War veterans living in Israel. He also spoke on the “Hamador L’chipus Krovim” (Searching for Relatives Bureau) radio program. He learned that 4,000 American Jews served in the Korean War and some were indeed living in the Jewish state.

“This is just a small return for their contributions, which were immense,” Ma said. “They saved our country. I feel so fortunate that in Israel, we could recognize their sacrifice for us before they die.”

Another veteran already honored is Netanel Blasbalg, a retired engineer living near Haifa. Blasbalg, now 81, served in the US Marines from 1951 to 1953, based near Panmunjom. He welcomed Ma’s invitation to the first ceremony, and by this June 25 will have attended three of the four gatherings.

“I was tickled pink. I brought my daughter and three grandchildren because I wanted to show them how a nation expressed its thanks,” said Blasbalg, a Netherlands native who had followed his parents to Cuba and New York before he immigrated to Israel in 1955.

“It’s a lovely idea,” he added. “It’s a lesson on moral values you don’t usually come across, where a nation, after 50 [-plus] years, decides to thank all the Americans who fought. It was an important lesson for [my family] to learn.”

At the 2009 event, Goldstein delivered what Ma recalled was “a very, very emotional speech” about his combat experiences. Goldstein then broke into song — “Arirang,” South Korea’s most popular folk melody. His wife, children and grandchildren chimed in.

Ma and his staff were stunned. Goldstein explained that he felt great fondness for South Korea and had sung “Arirang” at the family’s Shabbat table ever since the war.

A month later, Ma received a call from Goldstein’s wife, Miriam. Her husband had died the previous week, but had spoken of the medal ceremony as “the most memorable moment of his whole life,” Ma recalled her saying.

The sentiment warmed Ma’s heart. Goldstein and his comrades set an example that South Korea lives by today, he said.

“We will not forget what they did for us,” Ma wrote of the soldiers in an email. “A Korean proverb says ‘love is transferred.’ That means that we get love from parents, but we cannot return it to our parents. Instead, we transmit our love to our children.

“Same [regarding] the help we got from friendly countries. It was great and essential help,” he said. “We cannot return it all. But we are providing our very sincere help to developing countries by sending UN peacekeeping forces or economic aid.”
